Founded in 1994, in an 18th century mansion on Rua Frei Vicente (Pelourinho), the Udo Knoff Museum of Tiles and Ceramics, the first of its kind in Brazil, preserves and exhibits the collection of 1,200 pieces by the German ceramist Horst Udo Knoff (1912 1994). In addition to Udo's own works, the museum also features Portuguese, Spanish, French, English, Dutch and Italian tiles, dating from the 16th to the 20th centuries, and creations by representative local artists such as Jenner Augusto, Genaro de Carvalho, Sante Scaldaferri, Calasans Neto and Carybé.

At the bottom of the museum is a gallery reserved for temporary exhibitions by contemporary artists and potters.
