Memorial Teotônio Vilela was inaugurated on April 25, 2005 and is a work by Oscar Niemayer that pays homage to the one who became known throughout Brazil as the Minstrel of Alagoas, for his fight in favor of political freedoms and the redemocratization of the country.

The controversial side of the monument's location, built at Praia da Pajuçara, was the severe criticism from architects and, mainly, from residents who lost sight of the sea. One of the cautions in the project was that whatever position the sun was in the statue would always remain in the shade.
