They were built on the remains of another sacred site of the Incas: the Acllahuasi or Temple of the Virgins of the Sun that housed three thousand women and young people chosen for their beauty and their lineage. The church was ordered to be built, in Renaissance style, in 1605 by Jerónimo de Pacheco and Lucía de Padilla.

The church of Santa Catalina is located between Santa Catalina and Loreto streets.

Many painters who have excelled in the 17th century have left a legacy of the highest quality. There are exhibited the works of Francisco Albani ´´The offering to the virgin´´, Juan Espinoza de los Monteros ´´the apotheosis and the foundation´´ and Lorenzo Sánchez ´´The assumption of the virgin´´.
