They are, according to tradition, the vestiges of the Arrifana Castle, but it is considered as a copy of "ribat", a fortified convent, of Arab origin.

This zone was inhabited until the earthquake of 1755, after which the town moved to the other margin.

The ruins revealed by the archaeological excavations, near the mouth of the river Aljezur, at the tip of Atalaia, on the beach of Arrifana.

This type of "convent" is the only one found in Portuguese territory, with another one referenced in Spanish territory in Alicante.
