Ilhéu das Rolas is an islet of the Sao Tome and Principe archipelago located in the Gulf of Guinea, south of the island of Sao Tome. Of volcanic origin, it is located just below the Equator Line.
The main (and almost only) economic activity is tourism, after the construction of a luxury resort. A permanent population of about 200 has its survival directly linked to tourism. It is only accessed by boat from Porto Alegre, on the island of São Tomé.
Thus, there is the Equator Standard, a small monument that marks the passage of the equatorial line through the Rolas Islet. It was erected in 1936 and contained (before being vandalized) an inscription, kept inside the standard, which read 'From the geodetic and astronomical works done by Gago Coutinho from 1916 to 1918, in S. Tomé, at the initiative of Eng. Rebelo de Andrade and with the support of all the settlers, it was concluded that the geodetic Ecuador passes at this point ». With a design pedestal that supports an armillary sphere, the monument rests on a polychrome base, representing the world map, in a setting that is composed of the verdant landscape and the Atlantic.
