Casa de José de Alencar is a cultural institution maintained by the Federal University of Ceará and listed by the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute in 1964. The area of the institution houses a house where José de Alencar lived his childhood in the then city of Messejana, today Fortaleza neighborhood.

The place was called Sítio Alagadiço Novo and was acquired by José Martiniano de Alencar during his first presidency in the then Province of Ceará as his private residence. Its current area is nine hectares and comprises a small house from the original complex built in 1826, currently called "little house", the ruins of the first steam engine in Ceará, the Arthur Ramos Museum, Pinacoteca Floriano Teixeira, the Braga Montenegro Library and a restaurant.

There was also a large house on the site that was destroyed. The "little house" maintains its original, simple construction, with tiled floors, brick and lime walls, empty tile, one level, roof in four waters, used carnauba wood for the rafters

Currently, the "Casa de José de Alencar" also houses the Music Education Degree Course, in conjunction with the Institute of Culture and Art (ICA) and the Faculty of Education (FACED).
