The Mateo Salado archaeological complex is made up of five monumental pyramids, distributed in an area of 12,000 square meters.
The complex is made up of five pyramidal mounds built on the basis of large mud walls. Its current extension is 20 hectares.
Also known as Ruinas de Azcona and Cinco Cerritos, it is located in front of the Plaza de la Bandera, on the border of the districts of Lima, Breña and Pueblo Libre. Between Tingo María and Mariano Cornejo avenues and Ernesto Malinowski, Enrique López Albújar, E. García Rosell and Belisario Sosa streets.
The first structure A is located on a large rectangular esplanade. This, in turn, is surrounded by four bypass walls that rise on each superimposed terrace, forming streets and passages.
The second structure is made up of a series of large enclosures and squares, which could indicate a residential character.
The other three structures are minor: the third has an internal staircase that leads to a high terrace; the fourth, which is quite separate from the group, has a plaza facing north, an extensive quadrangular court and numerous sepulchral chambers; the fifth is the smallest of the group and has a completely quadrangular plan.
Formerly it was connected by a narrow walled path with the archaeological group of Maranga. It is assigned to the Late Intermediate (1000 AD - 1470 AD) and the Late Horizon (1470 AD -1532 AD).
