Il résulte de la confluence de quatre lignes de flottaison provenant du versant sud de la Serra de Monchique qui forment ce système estuarien complexe qui intègre dunes, plages et terres agricoles, forêts semi-naturelles, forêts de pins et marais salés, abritant des espèces et des habitats de Intérêt communautaire. L'estuaire est protégé de l'océan par des dunes fixes qui limitent la zone de l'estuaire avec des rives de vasa et de sable, de vieilles salines, des pisciculturas et des marais.
