Cabo Frio
Located in the state of Rio de Janeiro, about two and a half hours by car or bus from the city of Rio de Janeiro, Cabo Frio was not always known for its beaches.
One of the oldest cities in this part of Brazil, Cabo Frio was founded by the Portuguese in 1615 (before the city of Rio), and soon became an important center for transportation, fishing and salt trade, which contributed to a wealth which peaked at the end of the 19th century.
The city has experienced an economic crisis in recent years, but was saved when oil was discovered nearby about 20 years ago.
The sun and the sand also helped save Cabo Frio. Today, this city of 120,000 people attracts more than one million tourists during the summer months.
This seafront city is still widely explored by foreign tourists, as well as those from Rio de Janeiro, Florianópolis, Belo Horizonte, Brasilia and other nearby cities.
Tourism
Cabo Frio is the perfect city for the tourist who likes nature with beautiful landscapes and / or fun, being a trip that pleases the whole family.
In the morning, beaches, at night famous bars and nightclubs restaurants, make the city a real party.
There are also several shopping centers, especially the famous Rua dos Biquinis, with more than 70 shops.
The city offers a wide variety of hotels, inns, sun, sea, beaches, historic buildings, culture and lots of fun.
Even though many travelers with an interest in colonial history end up in Parati in the South, Cabo Frio has its share of famous historical events.
Cabo Frio is a good place to plan dives, with more than 30 dive sites around the area.
In Papagaios Island, the most isolated of the diving points, one can dive by day or night.
In the Dois Irmãos, Comprida, Pargos and Breu islands are also good places for divers. Several companies offer guided diving excursions. Surf enthusiasts can also have fun at the Cabo Frio Surf Museum, which features over 300 surfboards, 210 trophies, and plenty of magazines.
Gastronomy
As in any coastal city, menus are essentially based on fish and seafood dishes. The region is very well served with fish such as snapper, anchovies and dorado, accompanied by French fries or cassava (cassava) and salad. There are many waterfront kiosks that offer such options on the menu, but before ordering, be aware of the size of the fish, which may vary by place and day.
The visitor also finds meats and dishes of international cuisine. Options are not lacking and most of the restaurants in the city focus on the canal and the neighborhood of Passage.
The shore of Praia do Forte is stocked with restaurants and kiosks for all palates. As a guarantee of good price and quality, watch out for the movement at the tables: the frequency of "locals" is usually the best thermometer to evaluate the service of an establishment.
Weather
The climate is semi-arid (hot and humid). The sun shines on average 315 days a year, with temperatures ranging from 40 ° in January to 16 ° in June.
Too much sun, too little rain, and low air humidity are the factors responsible for the frequency and intensity of the northeasterly wind, which blows almost all year long and pushes away the heavy clouds.
