Tourism
In the heart of the green Minho region, Braga is one of the largest religious centers in Portugal and, as such, is full of secular churches, such as Santa Cruz and Cathedral. On the top of a hill, the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus emerges as an important point of pilgrimage. Behind Mount Sameiro, a colossal statue of Our Lady blesses the region. Gardens, parks and solariums of the 18th century complete the scenery, which gains a unique flavor in specialized kitchens in traditional duck and cod rice to the minhota. It has more than 2,000 years of history, since it was founded by Romans with the name of Bracara Augusta, between 300 and 400 BC, and became the capital of the empire in northern Iberia. The ruins of this golden phase still exist in the archaeological complex. But the Bracarenses do not live only from the past. Quite the opposite: its universities, contemporary restaurants, student parties and lively bars surround the streets in such a jovial aura.
