No verão a vida noturna atrai jovens turistas hospedados nos municípios vizinhos. Fora da temporada a prioridade são as convenções e o turismo de terceira idade. Inaugurou um teleférico que liga Barra do Sul à Praia de Laranjeiras, um percurso de 1,6 km. A cidade é usada como base para se divertir no Beto Carrero World, fazer compras em Brusque e beber cerveja na Oktoberfest, em Blumenau. As praias do Centro ficam congestionadas na alta temporada.
