Gibraltar
Gibraltar is a British overseas territory located on the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula at the entrance to the Mediterranean. It has an area of 2, 3 square kilometers (6, 0 km2) and a northern border with the province of Cadiz, Andalusia, Spain.
The Rock of Gibraltar is the only point of reference in the region. At its base is the densely populated area of the city of almost 30,000 Gibraltar and other nationalities.
An Anglo-Dutch force captured Gibraltar from Spain in 1704 during the War of Spanish Succession, on behalf of the Habsburg suitor to the Spanish throne.
The territory was later given perpetually to Britain under the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713, having been an important base for the Royal Navy.
Today its economy is mainly based on turism, online games, financial services and transport.
The sovereignty of Gibraltar is a great point of discord in the Anglo Spanish relations because Spain affirms the claim of the territory.
The Gibraltars have overwhelmingly rejected proposals for Spanish sovereignty in a referendum in 1967 and again in 2002. Under the 2006 Gibraltar Constitution, Gibraltar is virtually independent, although some powers, such as defense and foreign affairs, remain under the responsibility of the UK.
